As we settle into our second moving into the third week of quarantine, we’re starting to get a better idea of what we’re in for. Many of our largest cities in the country are extending their lockdown regulations until at least 4/19/2020, which means we all have to hunker down and continue to do our part.

Do: Maintain Six Feet of Distance at All Times

When you’re out on essential errands, it’s important to stay six feet away from other human beings AT ALL TIMES. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

We know staying indoors for extended periods of time can be irritating, but that’s the point of what we’re doing: we’re sacrificing our own self-interests for the greater good. If you find yourself venturing outside every 20 minutes, even if it’s only for a few moments, you’re missing the point and failing to do your part. Stay indoors, please. Resist the urge to go outside.

Do: Maintain Cleanliness Throughout the Day

Wash your hands when you come into contact with common surfaces and make sure to keep your home clean and sanitized, this way you can avoid germs coming into your home as well as you spreading them outward.

Don’t: Have People Over

It’s important to isolate and quarantine during this time, which does not mean having friends over. Please, for the sake of everyone, shelter in place and avoid having ANY sort of gatherings until this time of quarantine is up.

Maintaining Social Distance Outdoors

Even in the midst of strict social distancing and self-quarantining in hopes of preventing further spread of COVID-19, many people in impacted areas and cities are spending most of their days indoors, however, getting some amount of fresh air and sunlight should still be on everyone’s agenda. But there is definitely a smart way to do this and a not-so-smart way to do this.

First of all, it’s incredibly important to maintain 6 feet of distance from every single other person who comes across your path. No exceptions. If you have trouble conceptualizing how much distance 6 feet is, break out your tape measurer at home and see for yourself. If you’re able, try to maintain double the distance — 12 feet.

Opt for Seclusion

Even when you venture outdoors, try to go to places where you think other people WON’T be. For instance, if you live near the beach, you might want to try to think a little more outside the box — many folks will opt to go to hotspots to spend their outdoor time, which is counterproductive to what we’re trying to do in limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Go Outdoors During Off Hours

Go extra early or save your outdoor time for later in the day. Again, you want to stay indoors during times of high traffic, so 9-5 is generally not going to be a good time.

Start Setting Boundaries

If you see someone failing to hold up their end of our civic duty, hold them accountable. Remind them that we’re all supposed to stay away from each other during this time. Try to express this sentiment as respectfully as you can to avoid offending anyone.

Staying Active at Home

If your job permits, it’s a good idea to do what you can to work remotely for the next few weeks. Ideally, you’ll be able to work from home until the Coronavirus is contained here in the states, like it’s starting to be in places like Korea and, to a lesser extent, China.

Staying away from well-populated venues and areas of the city in which you live is also a good idea, as is adopting rigorous hand-washing practices, not to mention preventing yourself from shaking hands or touching your eyes, nose, or mouth after coming into contact with commonly used objects and surfaces.
