Don’t Let Tension Define Your Life

Tension is always accumulating

At a certain point, doing nothing becomes not an option. Back pain, however mild or severe, is often the last symptom of systemic dysfunction. Tension in the surrounding musculature is always accumulating and we are very good at ignoring it. It’s why you can go years with vague tightness in the neck and shoulders, or months with non-specific lower back pain, without necessarily doing anything about it. As we ignore, this tension is pulling our spines out of alignment, devastating our posture and putting untold pressure on intervertebral discs. The degeneration that is likely to result will be painful which is why we always ask: why is the standard policy to ignore, ignore, ignore.

Dealing with tension proactively instead of reactively

It is written into our country’s healthcare system- wait until something goes wrong before addressing the condition reactively. At Family Chiropractic & Natural Healing Center, we believe in a different approach: rather than waiting for all this tension to reach a boiling point, we can dispel the tension daily, in order that it never boils in the first place. One way to do this is to simply roll out the tension. Whenever you feel tightness in your shoulders and neck becoming particularly strong, take a break from the current activity and try these two simple movements:

  • The neck roll: lower your right ear to your right shoulder then gently and slowly roll your neck to the left, chin toward chest, until your left ear is over your left shoulder. Repeat 5-10 times.
  • The shoulder roll: roll your shoulders, slowly and purposefully, forward over themselves 10 times; now repeat the motion in reverse.

Don’t underestimate the power of these simple stretches: it is not for nothing that you can actually feel the tension dissipating. Proactive, preventive healthcare is the right way to go about taking care of your spine. If you are interested in this natural, effective approach to balancing the spine and living your best life, give our office in Milpitas a call to schedule an appointment today.
